Hi, I'm Joseph McGreene, lifelong learner and teacher! I have 10 years of experience teaching, mentoring, and tutoring.
Beginning in my school years, I had several academic subject in which tutored my fellow students, namely music, research psychology, and history. After university, I began teaching a variety of subjects in the classroom as a substitute teacher. It was around this time I also began teaching TaeKwonDo and helping adults cope with mental illness by teaching coping strategies. Since then, I've mentored youth in trailbuilding and outdoor conservation and taught online and in-person piano lessons. Constantly ravenous for knwoledge and skills, I taught myself HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, subsequently began working as a developer, and commenced teaching it.
Currently, I teach and mentor in both music theory and front-end web development. A deep-dive: I am a teacher, through and through. And so, I am just as much a lifelong learner. I believe these two roles are tightly intertwined, because my experience as a learner informs my philosophy on teaching. I tend to prefer to listen first to what my students need from me, in order to ensure I provide the knowledge they actually need, rather than what I think they want: a somewhat different approach to teaching than many of tutors, mentors, and teachers I've met, who tend to have a fixed curriculum that less often takes the students needs into account at every stage of the teaching process. Instead, I like to work with the student to continually formulate what they need to learn based on where they are now by listening to them and observing their learning process for myself. This enables me to be an effective guide and advisor along their learning journey in addition to a teacher, rather than a lecturer or professor trying to get through the material in a timely manner. So if you're ready to jump in, let's do some learning together and maybe save the world via knowledge and skills!
